David Allan Coe – Rest in peace to an outlaw

It is with heavy hearts that we pay tribute to David Allan Coe, who passed away on April 29, 2026, at the age of 86.

One of the most authentic, unapologetic, and larger-than-life figures in outlaw country, Coe was a true original. Born in 1939 in Akron, Ohio, he lived a hard, rebellious life — spending much of his youth in reform schools and prison before turning to music. He arrived in Nashville in the late 1960s, living out of a hearse and refusing to play by the polished rules of the country music industry.

Coe became a cornerstone of the outlaw country movement alongside Willie, Waylon, and Merle. He wrote stone-cold classics like “Take This Job and Shove It” (a #1 hit for Johnny Paycheck) and delivered raw, honest performances that spoke directly to the working man, the outcast, and the rebel in all of us. While he was often underrated by the Nashville establishment, his influence and loyal fanbase have kept his music alive for decades.

They truly don’t make them like David Allan Coe anymore.

This playlist is a celebration of some of his greatest and most beloved songs — from rowdy anthems to heartfelt ballads. It’s a reminder of the Outlaw’s unmistakable voice and unforgettable catalog.

A Few Standout Tracks

“The Ride” One of Coe’s signature story songs, it tells the tale of a young musician hitchhiking and getting picked up by the ghost of Hank Williams. It’s become one of the most beloved songs in his catalog — a perfect blend of country storytelling and supernatural flair.

“Longhaired Redneck” A defiant, autobiographical anthem that perfectly captures Coe’s outlaw image and attitude. With lyrics about bikers, cowboys, and hippies all in the same bar, it became a rallying cry for anyone who didn’t fit the mainstream mold.

“Tennessee Whiskey” Coe was the first artist to record this song. While it later became a massive hit for George Jones and a modern standard thanks to Chris Stapleton, many fans still consider Coe’s raw, heartfelt version to be the definitive one.

From “You Never Even Called Me by My Name” to “Take This Job and Shove It,” “Cocaine Carolina,” and beyond — this playlist honors a true country legend who lived every word he sang.

Rest in peace, Outlaw. Your music will ride on forever.
