The Story of Millencolin
Millencolin was formed on October 12, 1992, in Örebro, Sweden, by three childhood friends: Nikola Šarčević (vocals and bass), Mathias Färm (guitar), and Erik Ohlsson (guitar). Drummer Fredrik Larzon joined shortly after in early 1993, completing the lineup that has remained together ever since.
The band’s name comes from the skateboard trick “melancholy” — a nod to their deep roots in skateboarding culture. Like many great punk bands of the era, they bonded over skateboarding and bands like Bad Religion. They signed with the local independent label Burning Heart Records and quickly built a following in the European punk scene with their early EPs and debut album Tiny Tunes (1994). When the album was later released in the US, it had to be renamed Same Old Tunes due to copyright issues with Warner Bros. over its similarity to the Tiny Toon Adventures cartoon.
Their breakthrough came with the 1995 album Life on a Plate, but it was Pennybridge Pioneers (2000) that truly put them on the global map. Recorded in Hollywood at Westbeach Recorders and produced by Brett Gurewitz of Bad Religion, the album marked a shift toward tighter, more melodic punk rock while keeping their signature energy and humor.
Fun Facts & Trivia
- “No Cigar” is easily one of their most famous songs worldwide. It was featured on the soundtrack for Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 2, which introduced Millencolin to a massive new audience in North America. In 2021, Tony Hawk himself teamed up with Nikola Šarčević and legendary skateboarder Steve Caballero for a special cover of the track.
- Steve Caballero (pro skating legend) was actually the one who pushed for “No Cigar” to be included on the Tony Hawk soundtrack.
- The title Pennybridge Pioneers is a playful English translation of their hometown Örebro (“Pennybridge”).
- Pennybridge Pioneers was the band’s first album recorded outside of Sweden and their first to achieve gold certification in Australia.
- Many of the earlier tracks on this playlist (like “Mr. Clean,” “Killercrush,” and “Bullion”) come from their rawer, ska-punk-influenced early days, while songs like “No Cigar,” “The Ballad,” and “Penguins & Polarbears” showcase the more refined melodic punk sound they perfected on Pennybridge Pioneers.
